Warm up to FALL

By Yanic Simard
Don’t you just love fall? The air feels cooler, the leaves are changing, and the kids are back in school! You start to notice the changes outside, which means its time to change up your look inside too!
Fall

Layering

Its that time of year where you begin to put layers and layers of clothing on, so why not “layer” your home décor as well? The more you layer, the fuller your home will feel, translating into how warm your place feels. Hardwood or laminate flooring can tend to feel cold, so we generally add an area rug to take away that feeling. Why not laying an area rug on top of another rug? A cowhide on a five-by-seven-ft. or eightby-10-ft. rug can look stunning. Layer your bedding in your bedroom, add a throw on top of your duvet, double up on your pillows. You can add level upon level to almost any of your soft furnishings – just be careful not to over do it!

Pillows

Pillows are one of my personal favourite décor items because they’re so easy to change when you’re ready for something new. If you have a solid, neutral coloured sofa, (which I always like to recommend) you can have as much fun as you want in dressing it up- guilt-free! Experiment as much as you want with colour. Hot colours this fall include shades of gold, copper, deep purple and burgundy. The colder it gets outdoors, the more time you spend indoors- which means you’ll want to cosy up your sofa as much as possible!
Tip: Cushions covered in velvet or chenille fabric are great for the fall and winter months.

Ready your fireplace

Your fireplace has been collecting dust for about five or six months now, which means it’s that time of year to contact the professional who services it, to make sure it’s safe to light up for those frigid evenings. Don’t forget about getting your chimney swept, you want to be sure everything is in proper working order.

Let it shine

The days are getting shorter and nightfall is creeping sooner. Make the “natural” light last longer with the beauty of candlelight- create ambience and a fresh scent throughout your home.

Outdoor space

Yes, you’ll be spending most of your time inside, but why not make your outdoor space comfortable too so you can enjoy time out there, at least until it gets too chilly to do so? Some of the most comfortable evenings occur at the beginning of this season, because the excessive heat and humidity have now dwindled away. The outdoors is so beautiful with the change of colour – take some time out of your day to take it in. Buy inexpensive cotton blankets and cushions for your patio furniture, and consider purchasing an outdoor rug. If you want the pleasure of being able to enjoy your outdoor space even longer, think about treating yourself an outdoor heater.
